Salon GST calculator

A bill with a service and a retail product on it is two different tax problems. Add your lines and see the split — per line, discount before tax, rounded once at the end.

The bill

“Incl.” means the amount already contains the tax — the customer pays exactly that figure. Unticked, tax is added on top.

The bill breaks down as

Gross
₹1,600.00
Taxable value
₹1,447.45
CGST
₹130.27
SGST
₹130.28
Total
₹1,708.00

Per line

  • Haircut₹847.45 + ₹152.55 = ₹1,000.00
  • Styling wax₹600.00 + ₹108.00 = ₹708.00

Why the order of operations matters

Three steps, and doing them in a different order produces a different bill. Any discount is allocated across the lines first, proportionally to their value. Tax is then computed on each line separately, against that line’s own rate and its own inclusive or exclusive setting. Only then is everything summed and rounded, once, to the rupee — rounding line by line accumulates an error that grows with the length of the bill.

This page runs the same functions that produce a real invoice in Salvoro rather than a copy written for the website, which is the only reason it is safe to say the two agree. Amounts are held in whole paise throughout, so the two halves of an odd-numbered tax always add back to the exact figure instead of losing a paisa to a decimal.

Common questions

How do I calculate GST on a salon bill with services and products?
Per line, not once on the total. Each line can carry a different rate and different inclusive or exclusive pricing, so a single percentage applied to the bill total will be wrong on at least one of them. Allocate any discount first, then compute tax on what each line actually charged.
Should the discount be applied before or after GST?
Before. A discount reduces the taxable value of the lines it applies to, which reduces the tax those lines carry. Applying it after tax charges the customer GST on money they never paid.
How are CGST and SGST split?
Equally. For a sale within one state the rate is halved, with one half going to the centre as CGST and one to the state as SGST. An 18% rate becomes 9% and 9%, and the two halves must sum to the exact tax charged.
When should a bill be rounded?
Once, on the grand total, after all lines and tax are summed. Rounding line by line accumulates an error that grows with the number of lines on the bill.

Worth knowing

  • This is a calculator, not tax advice. You supply the rates — confirm the ones that apply to your services and products with your accountant.
  • It computes a single bill. It does not file returns, produce a filing summary, or record anything.
  • Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The whole calculation runs in your browser.
  • It covers CGST, SGST and IGST. There is no cess, no reverse charge and no e-invoicing here.

Stop doing this by hand

Salvoro computes this on every bill, stores the tax on the invoice, and produces a per-branch summary at filing time. 30 days free, no card required.
